The Talisker1379 viewsThe steamboat Talisker heads off from Helensburgh pier during the bicentenary celebrations on Saturday August 4. A Helensburgh resident, Tom Peebles, built the vessel and its engine when he lived in the town, and at that time he was engineer for the Rhu RNLI lifeboat. Talisker was taken by trailer to his new home in Perthshire to be completed, and returned to Rhu by trailer for the celebrations. Photo by Norman MacLeod.

General Booth1377 viewsThe founder of the Salvation Army, General William Booth, leaves from Helensburgh pier the day after speaking at the Victoria Hall on October 26 1910, and is seen with Provost David S.Maclachlan. Booth, born in 1826, was the son of a Nottingham builder and converted to Christianity aged 15. He became a revivalist preacher, and in 1865 he and his wife Catherine set up a Christian Mission in London's east end to help the poor. It was reorganised along military lines in 1878, and the Salvation Army was born. He died in 1912.

Hermitage House1377 viewsOriginally the home of the Cramb family, who sold what was then called Cramb Park to the Town Council in 1911 for £3,750, Hermitage House became an annexe to Hermitage School after World War One service as a military hospital. “A Fresh Day, Portincaple, Loch Long†by Violet Kay1375 viewsViolet MacNeish Kay (1914–1971) was the daughter of well known artist James Kay (1858–1942), who designed their house Crimea on a hill at Whistlefield, overlooking Loch Long, and it is this view that is the subject of many of their paintings. This painting was acquired in 2009 by the Anderson Trust.

It was originally Baths House, built by Henry Bell, who built Europe's first commercial steamship the Comet in 1812. The building has had many alterations but still stands on East Clyde Street, having been converted into flats.

John emigrated to South Africa and his family are still there; Robert Douglas was in the oil industry, died in Burma, his only daughter Fiona is in Kirriemuir; James also a keen photographer was a bank manager in Fort William for many years; my father Alexander was an engineer, spent the war in the torpedo factory on Loch Long then worked for Rolls Royce before going to Workington as a machine shop manager; Mabel, the sister, died shortly after her parents in 1946.
