West United Free Church1397 viewsA 1914 photo by well known professional photographer John Stuart, of Thistlebank, Helensburgh, and Glasgow, of the West United Free Church in Colquhoun Square, later St Andrew's Church, then Old and St Andrew's Church, then the West Kirk, and now Helensburgh Parish Church. Built in 1845, it remained in the Free Church tradition until 1929 when it became a Church of Scotland congregation. The William Leiper-designed front porch was added in 1892, and the building survived a disastrous fire in 1924 which left only the walls standing.

Ben Lomond1397 viewsThis study looking south east across Loch Lomond towards Ben Lomond is by Allan M.Fraser, a prolific and talented Helensburgh artist who died in 1985 aged 75. He attended Hermitage School, where he later taught art, and studied at Glasgow School of Art. He taught in several Dunbartonshire schools, eventually becoming head of the art department at Dumbarton Academy. He was also a founder member of Helensburgh and District Art Club. Waverley and Balmoral1397 viewsThe Paddle Steamer Waverley, built in 1947 on the Clyde, and Classic Cruise Ship Balmoral, built in 1949 in Southampton, were together in dry dock for the first time ever on April 18 2012. The Garvel Clyde Dry Dock in Greenock was playing host to these ships, which this year are celebrating 200 years of commercial steam navigation, with the anniversary of Henry Bell’s Comet which was built in Port Glasgow.

1396 viewsThe pier at Barremman, Clynder, built about 1877 on the instructions of Robert Thom, owner of Barremman Estate, is pictured, circa 1903. It was blown up by the Army in November 1967 as it was the cheapest way to demolish the pier, which had become unsafe.
