Bought from the Duke of Argyll in 1877 for £650 by William Kidston with help from Sir James Colquhoun and others, Kidston Park was formerly named Cairndhu Point — known locally as Neddy's Point after a well known fisherman and ferryman who lived nearby — but was renamed Kidston Park from 1889 when Mr Kidston left money to support its maintenance.

The artist, a friend of the late Victorian painters of the 'Glasgow School', lived at Seacliffe, 112 East Clyde Street, some 200 yards from where this was painted.

The Comet replica1362 viewsThe 150th anniversary of Henry Bell's Comet was celebrated on September 18 1962 when a replica of the Comet arrived at Helensburgh Pier from Port Glasgow as part of a special regatta. Construction of the working replica was sponsored by Sir William Lithgow, and it is now on permanent display in Port Glasgow town centre.

Susie's Castle1362 viewsSusie lived for 60 years in the upturned fishing smack, her 'castle' on the Loch Long shore at Portincaple, and postcards of her home were sold. In this image she is standing at the door knitting and puffing her clay pipe. Her husband Jamie made a living from fishing, and the creel or basket in the foreground would be used for carrying fish. If he had a good catch, he would barrel it up to Whistlefield Station and take the train to Glasgow for the fish market. Image circa 1912.

Waverley at Helensburgh1361 viewsA print of a painting by Ian Orchardson, who lived in Saltcoats where he taught as an art teacher and died in 1997. He left teaching to concentrate full time on his interest of painting Clyde shipping, including steamers and clippers, as well as the series of six famous 'Doon the Water' stops of Helensburgh Pier, Dunoon Pier, Gourock Pier, Greenock Pier, Rothesay Pier and Wemyss Bay. His paintings give an authentic feel of shipping on the Clyde in times past, and examples of his work are highly sought after.
