This slightly damaged image was kindly supplied by Doris Gentles, whose father, Harry Smith, is in the picture fifth from the right in the second row. He was one of four brothers serving in the trenches, and two of them were severely wounded.

Baird bust1078 viewsA bust of John Logie Baird was unveiled in Hermitage Park, Helensburgh, in 1960 by his sister Miss Annie Baird, who was introduced by Provost J.McLeod Williamson. Some years later the bust was moved to a position on the seafront opposite William Street.

S.S. Marmion1078 viewsAn early image of the Clyde paddle steamer Marmion leaving Arrochar. The 403 ton vessel was launched on May 5 1906 by A and J Inglis at Pointhouse, Glasgow, and placed on the Loch Goil and Arrochar service for the North British SP. She was requisitioned for mineweeping duty at Dover from 1915 as HMS Marmion II, and returned to the Clyde for the 1920 season, then was laid up for a redesign. She returned to service in 1926 as an all-year-round vessel, was reboilered in 1932, then again was requisitioned for war service. She was stationed at Harwich and survived the Dunkirk evacuations, but was sunk by enemy bombers at Harwich on the night of April 8 1941. Later she was raised and scrapped.

Portrait mystery1076 viewsSir James Guthrie (1859-1930), who lived much of his life at Rhu and Helensburgh and was the leader of the now famous Glasgow Boys, painted this portrait of a young girl. Art collector Jim Smith from Blantyre owns the 24 x 18s ins charcoal and crayon drawing, and would love to know who the young lady subject was.

Luss Parish Church1075 viewsLuss Parish Church, circa 1907. This picturesque village church, the third on this site on the banks of Loch Lomond, was built by Sir James Colquhoun in 1875 in the memory of his father who died along with five ghillies in a drowning accident off Inchtavannach. It has beautiful stained glass windows and a uniquely timbered roof, featured frequently in the TV soap 'Take the High Road', and has also hosted many celebrity weddings. The ancient graveyard has 15 listed ancient monuments, the earliest lie at the main entrance to the church, two slabs, each with a simple cross from the 7th or 8th century.
