The Talisker1277 viewsThe steamboat Talisker heads off from Helensburgh pier during the bicentenary celebrations on Saturday August 4. A Helensburgh resident, Tom Peebles, built the vessel and its engine when he lived in the town, and at that time he was engineer for the Rhu RNLI lifeboat. Talisker was taken by trailer to his new home in Perthshire to be completed, and returned to Rhu by trailer for the celebrations. Photo by Norman MacLeod.

1277 viewsThe pier at Barremman, Clynder, built about 1877 on the instructions of Robert Thom, owner of Barremman Estate, is pictured, circa 1903. It was blown up by the Army in November 1967 as it was the cheapest way to demolish the pier, which had become unsafe.

Deborah Kerr and Peter Viertel1276 viewsHelensburgh film star Deborah Kerr with her second husband, the German-born, Californian-educated author and screenwriter Peter Viertel, photographed in their home in Klosters, Switzerland, in September 1964 four years after their marriage. She died in England on October 16 2007, and he died 19 days later on November 4 in Marbella, Spain, where they had a second home.

Ferniegair monkey puzzle tree1276 viewsThis monkey puzzle tree, in the garden of 224 West Princes Street, Helensburgh, was felled on November 15 2012. Its size suggests that it was one of the original trees on the Ferniegair estate. Its proper name is Araucaria araucana, and the tree, originally from South America, is so-called after the owner of a specimen in 19th century Britain suggested that its unusual branches would puzzle even a monkey to climb. PS Maid of the Loch1272 viewsThe 555 ton Maid of the Loch was the last paddle steamer built in Britain, and the last of a long line of Loch Lomond steamers beginning about 1816. Built by A. & J.Inglis of Glasgow, she was dismantled, shipped by rail to Balloch where the sections were reassembled, and launched on March 5 1953. Her last commercial sailing was in August 1981, and now she is looked after at Balloch Pier — where this picture was taken in 1968 — by the Maid of the Loch Preservation Society.
