The Comet replica1156 viewsThe 150th anniversary of Henry Bell's Comet was celebrated on September 18 1962 when a replica of the Comet arrived at Helensburgh Pier from Port Glasgow as part of a special regatta. Construction of the working replica was sponsored by Sir William Lithgow, and it is now on permanent display in Port Glasgow town centre.

The Hermit's Well1156 viewsGardeners are at work and a family are having a picnic in this picture of the Hermit's Well in Hermitage Park. Image circa 1920, nine years after the park was created after the Town Council purchased the grounds from the Cramb family for £3,750. Legend has it that a hermit once lived in the park, and the Hermit's Well, with its copper ladle, granted a wish to those who drank from it. It is there to this day, but is not maintained in a good condition.

Ben Lomond1156 viewsThis study looking south east across Loch Lomond towards Ben Lomond is by Allan M.Fraser, a prolific and talented Helensburgh artist who died in 1985 aged 75. He attended Hermitage School, where he later taught art, and studied at Glasgow School of Art. He taught in several Dunbartonshire schools, eventually becoming head of the art department at Dumbarton Academy. He was also a founder member of Helensburgh and District Art Club. Deborah Kerr and Peter Viertel1155 viewsHelensburgh film star Deborah Kerr with her second husband, the German-born, Californian-educated author and screenwriter Peter Viertel, photographed in their home in Klosters, Switzerland, in September 1964 four years after their marriage. She died in England on October 16 2007, and he died 19 days later on November 4 in Marbella, Spain, where they had a second home.

Waverley at Helensburgh1153 viewsA print of a painting by Ian Orchardson, who lived in Saltcoats where he taught as an art teacher and died in 1997. He left teaching to concentrate full time on his interest of painting Clyde shipping, including steamers and clippers, as well as the series of six famous 'Doon the Water' stops of Helensburgh Pier, Dunoon Pier, Gourock Pier, Greenock Pier, Rothesay Pier and Wemyss Bay. His paintings give an authentic feel of shipping on the Clyde in times past, and examples of his work are highly sought after.
