PS Jeanie Deans1204 viewsThe popular paddle steamer Jeanie Deans, circa 1933. She was built by Fairfield at Govan and launched in 1931, then extensively refitted after war service. She remained a passenger favourite on cruises from Craigendoran until the end of the 1964 season. The next year she went to the Thames and was renamed 'Queen of the South'. She was broken up in Antwerp, Belgium, in 1967.

Cairndhu Hotel1203 viewsThe Cairndhu Hotel, later a nursing home for the elderly and now disused and boarded up, photographed by Helensburgh photographer Bill Benzie. Originally Cairndhu House, it was built in 1871 to a William Leiper design in the style of a grand chateau for John Ure, Provost of Glasgow, whose son became Lord Strathclyde and lived in the mansion. DEPV Talisman1203 viewsBuilt in 1935 by A. & J.Inglis, Pointhouse, Glasgow, for the London & North Eastern Railway, the 544-ton diesel-electric direct drive paddle steamer was used on year-round runs from Craigendoran to Rothesay and the Kyles of Bute. She saw World War Two service as HMS Aristocrat, including being an HQ ship at the Normandy landings. After 1953 she was allocated to the Wemyss Bay - Largs - Millport ferry route. She was withdrawn after the 1966 season and broken up for scrap at Dalmuir in 1967. Image taken 1946.

General Booth1202 viewsThe founder of the Salvation Army, General William Booth, leaves from Helensburgh pier the day after speaking at the Victoria Hall on October 26 1910, and is seen with Provost David S.Maclachlan. Booth, born in 1826, was the son of a Nottingham builder and converted to Christianity aged 15. He became a revivalist preacher, and in 1865 he and his wife Catherine set up a Christian Mission in London's east end to help the poor. It was reorganised along military lines in 1878, and the Salvation Army was born. He died in 1912.

The Kidston Family1202 viewsMembers of the Kidston family, who owned the mansion Ferniegair next to Cairndhu on the west seafront, are pictured at a family Christmas party, circa 1900. The Kidstons were great benefactors to Helensburgh over many years. Andrew Bonar Law, the burgh man who became prime minister, can be seen on the left in the back row. Ferniegair monkey puzzle tree1202 viewsThis monkey puzzle tree, in the garden of 224 West Princes Street, Helensburgh, was felled on November 15 2012. Its size suggests that it was one of the original trees on the Ferniegair estate. Its proper name is Araucaria araucana, and the tree, originally from South America, is so-called after the owner of a specimen in 19th century Britain suggested that its unusual branches would puzzle even a monkey to climb. She was photographed in a London hotel on August 10 1972 while rehearsing for a new play 'The Day After The Fair', based on a Thomas Hardy short story and written by Frank Harvey. The production went on a short tour of the provinces before opening at London's Lyric Theatre in October.
