Caledonian no.1231704 viewsCaledonian locomotive no.123 pictured at the Helensburgh engine depot in 1948 during an excursion to mark the centenary of the Caledonian Railway. Built by Neilson & Co. in Springburn in 1886, she won a gold medal at the Edinburgh International Exhibition that year. In regular service, no.123 worked on the 101-mile Carlisle to Edinburgh section of the west coast route. She was withdrawn in 1935 and is now an exhibit at Glasgow's Transport Museum. Tarbet Hotel, circa 19221702 viewsErected about 1810, the Tarbet Hotel was built in true Scottish baronial style with fine features both inside and out, and has been a mecca for visitors ever since.

Engines at Helensburgh1702 viewsThree V1 engines — 67628, 67655 and 67616 — are pictured at the Helensburgh shed, circa 1960. Several engines were based at Helensburgh although they were nominally allocated to Parkhead. Of Gresley design and introduced in 1930, engines in this class weighed 84 tons.

Highland Games1701 viewsElizabeth Breheny is pictured with her mother and aunts at the Helensburgh Highland Games at Camis Eskan in the early 1950s. This is thought to have been the last burgh Games, but it is planned to resurrect the event in the summer of 2008 at Ardencaple.

Shandon Bus Crash1700 viewsA Garelochhead Coach Service double decker bus lies on the beach at Shandon after an accident on the old lochside road in November 1965. Andrew Shirley from Rhu, who is researching the Garelochhead bus companies, believes this bus is MXX 177, one of the former London Transport RT class operated by the firm. It was repaired and put back into service.

Hartfield House1700 viewsThis Cove mansion was owned by James, Lord Inverclyde, second son of the first Lord Inverclyde, and grandson of Sir George Burns, Bart., founder of the Cunard Line. An enthusiastic yachtsman, he was Vice-Commodore of the Royal Northern Yacht Club at Rhu and a member of the Royal Yacht Squadron, president of the Scottish Hockey Association, a cricketer, curler, and tennis player. He leased the shooting on Rosneath moor from the Duke of Argyll. Later it belonged to his son Alan, the 4th Baron, and then became a YMCA holiday home. The mansion was demolished in the 1960s. Clyde Grocery1696 viewsRobert McIntosh Clyde, owner of the R.M.Clyde grocery at 64 and 66 West Princes Street, Helensburgh, is pictured outside the shop with members of his family. The red sandstone building was called Waverley Place, and was designed by Robert Wemyss and built in 1897, opposite the Post Office. His brother was Scotland's leading actor of his time, John Clyde.
