Malcolm Baird at bust unveiling1241 viewsMalcolm Baird, the inventor's son and now a retired professor and president of Helensburgh Heritage Trust, is pictured at the unveiling of a bust of John Logie Baird in Hermitage Park, Helensburgh, in 1960. Some years later the bust was moved to a position on the seafront opposite William Street.

Royal Guide Colours1240 viewsHRH Princess Louise, the Dowager Duchess of Argyll, who lived the later years of her life in Rosneath Castle, presents new colours to the 1st Rosneath Peninsula Girl Guides in 1928. On another occasion she presented the Union Flag to the 1st Cove and Kilcreggan Guides, and it is the oldest in the County of Dunbartonshire and still used in parades. Andy Clyde1239 viewsFilm actor Andy Clyde was brought up in Helensburgh where his family had a grocers shop on West Princes Street. Son of a Scottish theatrical producer/manager, he joined his siblings David and Jean on stage in childhood. He went to the States in the early 1920s to join producer Mack Sennett's roster of comedians. An expert at makeup, Clyde played a variety of roles, from city slickers to unshaven bums. He appeared as California, comic sidekick to western star William Boyd, in the Hopalong Cassidy westerns.

1238 viewsA previously unpublished picture from a fighter pilot's scrapbook of members of the RAF's 610 Squadron on summer visit to Arrochar from their base in Cheshire in 1938. In the background is a steamer at the now demolished Arrochar Pier, and the summit of the Cobbler mountain. The following year war broke out and two years later these men were fighting in the Battle of Britain and Helensburgh had its own RAF station. Image supplied by Robin Bird.

Hermitage Park War Memorial1237 viewsThe War Memorial in Hermitage Park, circa 1930. In those days the pond was full, but nowadays it is empty for safety reasons. Designed by well known local architect Alexander Nisbet Paterson after a campaign by his father-in-law, artist J.Whitelaw Hamilton, one of the 'Glasgow Boys', the War Memorial was completed in 1923. A service is held in the Garden of Remembrance on the Sunday nearest to November 11.

Jean Clyde and Sir Harry Lauder1237 viewsStage star Jean Clyde from Helensburgh and her second husband Bill McQuaid with Sir Harry Lauder (left) taken in Skye, circa 1938 — three years after he announced his retirement, although he did entertain troops during the Second World War. Best remembered as the little tartan comic with the twisted walking stick, Sir Harry (August 4 1870—February 26 1950) was described by Sir Winston Churchill as "Scotland's greatest ever ambassador”.
