Originally West Shandon, this magnificent building was the home of Robert Napier, the greatest figure in Clyde shipbuilding and marine engineering in the mid-19th century. During World War One the Hydro became a hospital, and in World War Two it was used by the army. In 1951 it became a hotel again, but in 1957 it was closed and demolished.

Susie's Castle1365 viewsBorn in 1847, Susie Reid was a well-known character, not only at Portincaple, where she lived for many years until her death at 81, but also much further afield. Susie's personality would probably have been enough to make her a local celebrity, but the extra factor that ensured her a place in the hall of fame lay in the fact that her home was an upturned fishing smack.
