Susie and her Castle1394 viewsBorn in 1847, Susie Reid was a well-known character, not only at Portincaple, where she lived for many years until her death at 81, but also much further afield. Her personality would probably have been enough to make her a local celebrity, but the extra factor that ensured her a place in the hall of fame was that her home was an upturned fishing smack. 150th anniversary booklet1390 viewsThis illustrated booklet was published by the Comet Trust, based at Lithgows Ltd. in Port Glasgow, to mark the 150th anniversary and was printed by James Paton Ltd. of Paisley, price one shilling. It was sold in aid of the Comet Trust Fund, established to provide travelling scholarships for shipbuilding apprentices. It told the story of Henry Bell, and also of the building of the 1962 Comet replica.

Cairndhu was built in 1871 by architect William Leiper for John Ure, then Provost of Glasgow, and Ferniegair was built in 1869 by architect John Honeyman. Behind is Ardencaple Quadrant, built originally to house those who had been injured in the First World War. Image circa 1960.

G.Arthur McInnes Ltd.1387 viewsAn early view of G.Arthur McInnes, Drapers, 77-81 Sinclair Street, Helensburgh. The shop opened on February 15 1929 on the site previously occupied by grocer R.M.Clyde, six years after Robert’s daughter Jean married George Arthur McInnes on January 3 1923. George died in 1937, but Jean carried on until her death in 1941. Her daughter Isobel — better known as Belle and wife of Waldies garage boss and town councillor George Aitkenhead — ran the business for many years with the aid of manager Duncan Ralph.
