1965 Royal visit1626 viewsThe Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh are pictured in Helensburgh Central Station admiring a model of the first 'Blue Train' which was a gift for Prince Andrew. The Blue Trains were introduced into service on the Helensburgh-Glasgow line in 1960. The 15 minute visit was on Monday June 28 1965 when the royal couple were on their way to open new County Council offices at Garshake in Dumbarton, and the royal couple arrived at and left Clydebank on the royal yacht Britannia. Behind them are Provost J.McLeod (Cloudy) Williamson and the Lord Lieutenant of Dunbartonshire, Admiral Sir Angus Cunninghame Graham.

Vice-Admiral Sir Ian McGeoch1624 viewsHELENSBURGH man Vice-Admiral Sir Ian McGeoch, who died on August 12 2007 at the age of 93, is reputed to have played a major part in the choice of Faslane as the home of Britain’s Polaris submarine fleet. But the World War Two hero was best known as a submarine ace and a serial escaper after being captured by the Germans in the Mediterranean in 1943.

Dunmore House, Rhu1624 viewsAn old image of Dunmore House which stood beside Pier Road, Rhu, and opposite Rhu Pier. The last owner of the house was a recluse who allowed the building to deteriorate to such an extent that latterly he was living in a tent inside one room because the roof was leaking so badly. Push and pull1623 viewsThis LNER Class C15 Reid N.B. design locomotive, weighing 60 tons, was pictured at Arrochar and Tarbet Station in 1959 by Derek Penney. The class dated from 1911 and was built by the Yorkshire Engine Co. It was one of three which operated the push and pull service from Craigendoran to Arrochar, known as 'The Wee Arrochar'.

The event raised £25,000 for the Ruth Brown Cell Processor Fund launched by Bobby's wife, a cancer sufferer, and the Erskine Hospital for disabled ex-servicemen and women. It featured an amateur international between Scotland and Ireland.

Craigrownie Castle1618 viewsCraigrownie Castle, Cove, is a B listed building designed by world renowned architect Alexander 'Greek' Thomson in 1852, and recently renovated. There are six reception rooms, including an 800 sq ft ballroom, drawing room, library, morning room, dining room and informal sitting room. Thomson was 34 at the time and better known for his grand classic Grecian architecture in Glasgow. It was built as a weekend retreat by John McElroy, a wealthy Glasgow iron, railway and property magnate. Image circa 1914.
