Tracks cleared1100 viewsOn Wednesday February 28 2018 an exceptionally severe blizzard hit much of Scotland and rail services were suspended. The following day a class 37 diesel locomotive with a snowplough was sent from Fort William to Bathgate and then back to Helensburgh to clear the tracks. It reached Helensburgh Central Station on the morning of Friday 2nd March, but passenger services from Helensburgh did not resume until the Sunday morning. Photo by Darrel Hendrie.

PS Waverley1097 viewsBuilt by A. & J.Inglis at Pointhouse, Glasgow in 1946, the 693-ton Waverley entered service in 1947 and is the world's last sea-going paddler. She replaced the previous Waverley, built in 1899 and sunk at Dunkirk in 1940, she cruised to all parts of the Clyde Estuary until withdrawn after the 1973 season by Caledonian-MacBrayne. Next year she was sold to the Paddle Steamer Preservation Society after a massive public campaign in Scotland, and re-entered service in 1975 with support from local authorities. She calls regularly at Helensburgh during the summer. She is pictured at Gourock in 1970.

King's letter1096 viewsThis letter was a personal message following World War Two from King George to schoolchildren throughout Britain, sent on June 8 1946. This copy was donated to Helensburgh Heritage Trust by Trust director Cecilia Dunlop.

The Gareloch, by Flint1095 viewsThe Gareloch from Shandon, painted in 1918 by Sir William Russell Flint. Born in Edinburgh in 1880, Flint’s remarkable talent was discovered at an early age. He studied at the Royal Institution School of Art in Edinburgh and after serving an apprenticeship at a printing works, he moved to London aged 20 to become a medical illustrator. In 1903 he joined the Illustrated London News, then served in World War One and became Admiralty Assistant Overseer - Airships. After the war his artistic career flourished.
