East Bay and Queen's Hotel1197 viewsA 1903 image of Helensburgh's East Bay, with the Queen's Hotel on the right. It was originally Baths House, built by Henry Bell, who built Europe's first commercial steamship the Comet in 1812. The building has had many alterations but still stands on East Clyde Street, having been converted into flats.

Band of Hope1193 viewsThere was a large attendance at the Band of Hope garden party and conference at Cairndhu House, Helensburgh, on June 6 1908. The Band of Hope, a temperance organisation for working-class children, was founded in Leeds in 1847. All members took a pledge of total abstinence and were taught the 'evils of drink'. Members were enrolled from the age of six and met once a week to listen to lectures and participate in activities. Music played an important role and competitions were held between different Band of Hope choirs. Members of the local Temperance Societies also organised outings for the children, and with the growth of the railways, trips were arranged to the nearest coastal resorts.

Maid of the Loch1192 viewsA Hector Cameron photo of the Maid of the Loch at Balloch Pier in August 1970. The 555 ton vessel was the last paddle steamer built in Britain, and the last of a long line of Loch Lomond steamers beginning about 1816. Built by A. & J.Inglis of Glasgow, she was dismantled, shipped by rail to Balloch where the sections were reassembled, and launched on March 5 1953. Her last commercial sailing was in August 1981, and now she is looked after at Balloch Pier by the Maid of the Loch Preservation Society.

Sugar ship1190 viewsThe 8,325 ton Greek cargo ship Captayannis lying on a sandbank near to Ardmore Point. On the evening of January 27 1974 the area suffered from a terrific storm which blew the vessel from its anchor and caused it to collide with the BP tanker British Light. The anchor chains of the tanker holed the sugar boat, allowing water to pour into her, so she was beached in the shallow waters over the sandbank.
