The Black 5 class of locomotive was introduced in 1934 by the London Midland and Scottish Railway. The class K-1 locomotives were ordered by the London and North Eastern Railway but were delivered after nationalisation in 1948; they were a modification of the K-4 class which had been introduced in 1938 specifically for use on the West Highland Line.
