1960 Craigendoran Swim1992 viewsHelensburgh Swimming Club prepare to dive from Craigendoran pier to swim to Helensburgh pier in the annual event in August 1960. The first girl is club champion for many years Sheila Bell, next to her is Elspeth McLean, and fifth girl along is Sandy MacRitchie. The boy second from right rubbing his hands is Colin McCallum. Olympic Medalist Bobby MacGregor1991 viewsHelensburgh-born Scottish and British champion and world record holder Bobby MacGregor gave a demonstration swim at the Helensburgh Swimming Club Gala in the outdoor pool in August 1964. Son of a former burgh pondmaster, he went on to take silver in the 100 metres freestyle at the Tokyo Olympics a few weeks later.
Now an architect, Bobby moved to Helensburgh some years ago.

Wartime colours1982 viewsA 1942 image of the steamer Lucy Ashton arriving at Kilcreggan Pier. The 271-ton vessel was launched on May 24 1888 by T.B.Seath at Rutherglen. She began on the Holy Loch run but later became more familiar on the Gareloch service from Craigendoran. She remained on the Clyde throughout both world wars. She made her last run in February 1949. Her stripped down hull saw further experimental use by the British Shipbuilding Research Association, including being fitted with a jet engine.

West End United 19651979 viewsHelensburgh's West End United football team which took part in the Gareloch League, which also included teams from the Faslane base, Arrochar, Garelochhead, Rosneath and Kilcreggan. The club was run by secretary Jimmy Shields for ten years, and after his death the team folded. Morar House1969 viewsThe sadly neglected Morar House, which for some years was renamed Drumadoon, at the top of Upper Colquhoun Street, Helensburgh, opposite the Charles Rennie Mackintosh mansion Hill House. It was built by William Leiper in 1903, a year after Hill House, for the McAlpine family who owned a shipping firm, and was later the home of the Hogarth shipping family. For some years it was a nursing home, but has been unoccupied since then and is rapidly deteriorating. Photo by Stewart Noble.

Loch Long Torpedo Range1964 viewsThis picture, circa 1920, shows the Loch Long Torpedo Range which was in use from 1912-86. The building was badly damaged by fire and demolished in 2007. Activity at the range reached a peak during World War Two, with more than 12,000 torpedoes being fired down the loch in 1944.
