Gairloch Head1160 viewsA print of Garelochhead probably from a book written by John M.Leighton around 1840, entitled "Strath Clutha or Beauties of the Clyde". The name J.Fleming is in the bottom left corner and the name Joseph Swan in the bottom right corner. John Fleming was a Greenock artist who lived from 1792-1845. The Gareloch, by Flint1154 viewsThe Gareloch from Shandon, painted in 1918 by Sir William Russell Flint. Born in Edinburgh in 1880, Flint’s remarkable talent was discovered at an early age. He studied at the Royal Institution School of Art in Edinburgh and after serving an apprenticeship at a printing works, he moved to London aged 20 to become a medical illustrator. In 1903 he joined the Illustrated London News, then served in World War One and became Admiralty Assistant Overseer - Airships. After the war his artistic career flourished.

“Portincaple – Loch Long†by Evelyn Carslaw1153 viewsThis work by Evelyn Carslaw (1881–1968), a Glasgow Girl contemporary of Norah Neilson Gray, was donated to the Anderson Trust by her son John Carslaw, himself a painter and a Trustee. The painting invites comparison with an earlier painting in the Collection of the same view by John Reid Murray, and with two paintings acquired in 2009 by a more recent artist who also lived and painted at Portincaple, Violet MacNeish Kay (1914–1971).

It records a less familiar view of the loch and was a welcome addition to the two other paintings by this artist held in the Trust Collection, 'Evening on the Gareloch' and 'Ebb Tide', an idyllic view of Helensburgh’s West Clyde Street. The other two are "View from the Long Croft" by Viola Paterson and "View from the Golf Links" by John Young Hunter.

Whistlefield, Gareloch1130 viewsAn oil painting by James Kay RSA RSW entitled 'Whistlefield, Gareloch', which in 2014 was valued at £9,500. Kay lived there at Crimea (now Dalriada), Portincaple for 33 years and worked in a studio at 79 West Regent Street, Glasgow. The house belonged to his brother Alec, a shipping office manager. The name was chosen when they moved there in 1909 because his father was a Chief Petty Officer in the Royal Navy during the Crimean War, serving in the Black Sea area. James painted an elaborate mural of scenes from the Crimean War on the walls of the main entrance. Image date unknown.

Maggie Hamilton by her husband1100 viewsNoted artist Maggie Hamilton (1867-1952) was the daughter of James and Mary Hamilton, of Thornton Lodge, Sinclair Street, Helensburgh, and brother of artist J.Whitelaw Hamilton, one of the first of the 'Glasgow Boys'. In 1897 she married architect and artist Alexander Nisbet Paterson, who painted this still life of her at their family home, Long Croft, in West Rossdhu Drive. Tinker Girl1097 viewsEntitled ‘Tinker Girl’, this portrait is signed G.I.Smith and is the work of Gregor Ian Smith, one of the most highly regarded local artists of the 20th century. It was donated to Helensburgh Heritage Trust by Eleanor Williamson, who lives in Cove. She said: "Gregor did this as a demonstration at an Art Class that I took for a few years at Kilcreggan School. I was the tutor and asked him to come as a guest artist. I asked him to sign it and he gave it to me. It was painted about 1970."

House at Rhu1062 viewsSir James Guthrie (1859-1930), who lived much of his life at Rhu and Helensburgh and was the leader of the now famous Glasgow Boys, painted this picture entitled 'My house at Rhu'. His home for many years in the village was the family home of his wife, Helen Newton Whitelaw, who lived at her family home, a Rhu mansion called Rowmore, which has stunning grounds and views over the Gareloch. Despite the title, this appears to show only the entrance. Oil on canvas, 56 x 41 cms, it is in the collection of Fife Council and is at Kirkcaldy Art Gallery and Museum.
