Helensburgh Swimming Pool1145 viewsA 1959 image showing the entrance and the north west corner of the outdoor pool, built in 1928 as a gift from Provost Andrew Buchanan, beside Helensburgh Pier. It was replaced in 1976 by an indoor pool on an adjacent site, and a year later the outdoor pool was closed. It was demolished in 1996 and replaced by a childrens play area. Originally West Shandon, this magnificent building was the home of Robert Napier, the greatest figure in Clyde shipbuilding and marine engineering in the mid-19th century. During World War One the Hydro became a hospital, and in World War Two it was used by the army. In 1951 it became a hotel again, but in 1957 it was closed and demolished.Jun 08, 2011
