Nude Study by Stephen Conroy903 viewsNude Study by highly regarded Helensburgh artist Stephen Conroy, is an 18 x 14 inches charcoal drawing on paper which was originally purchased at the Glasgow School of Art Degree Show in 1987, the year it was drawn. Inscribed by the artist on the reverse side, it was offered for sale in October 2011 at £4,750. Stephen, whose paintings can sell for as much as £100,000, was born in Helensburgh in 1964, and brought up in Renton. He lives near Cardross. Upper Morelaggan1061 viewsUpper Morelaggan on Loch Longside, the scene recently of major excavations of a rural settlement which dates back to 1501. The artist was Dunfermline-born Waller Hugh Paton, who has been described as the leading exponent of the Pre-Raphaelite landscape in Scotland and who exhibited views — mostly painted on Arran — at the Royal Scottish Academy from 1854. Kidston Park bandstand1092 viewsThe now demolished bandstand at Kidston Park. Bought from the Duke of Argyll in 1877 for £650 by William Kidston with help from Sir James Colquhoun and others, it was formerly Cairndhu Point — known locally as Neddy's Point after a well known fisherman and ferryman who lived nearby — but was renamed Kidston Park from 1889 when Mr Kidston left money to support its maintenance and requested the change. 1940 colour demonstration895 viewsThe first public demonstration of John Logie Baird's 120-line system to transmit colour films on to a large screen took place at the Dominion Theatre in London on February 4 1938, with a second demonstration from Crystal Palace on February 17. He used the electronic system to produce a 600-line two by two and a half feet screen image on a colour Tele-Radiogram. Robert Bain memorial814 viewsThe large iron memorial in Rhu Churchyard erected by Comet steamship pioneer Henry Bell to Robert Bain, the skipper most famously associated with the Comet, following his death in 1829 at the age of 39. He spent 16 years of his life working for Bell, Helensburgh's first Provost, and also served as deputy town clerk. He took over command of the Comet in 1812.
