Spy's Coalyard1434 viewsA. & R.Spy, coal merchants and colliery agents, had a coalyard at 23-25 Sinclair Street — in the middle of the block between Clyde and Princes Streets — until 1964 when the business was sold to D. & G.Allan Ltd. of Glasgow. It was then acquired by William Low Ltd. who built the town's first supermarket on the site and opened it in 1966. The firm also had premises at 110 West Princes Street and a wholesale depot at Helensburgh Central Station. In the picture, supplied by Pat Drayton, are Robin and Jack Spy.Mar 05, 2009

Seafront view1061 viewsA Tuck & Sons Oilette postcard of Helensburgh seafront, circa 1907. It was painted by Henry Wimbush, who was most active in painting between 1881 and 1908 when he lived at various addresses in London. Like many of his contemporaries in the Tuck's postcards stable, he toured Britain for inspiration and his coverage was far more comprehensive than many of the other Tuck illustrators — including a number of Clyde scenes. His watercolours were published by Tuck between 1904 and 1908, the majority in the Oilette series.Mar 05, 2009

Waverley at Craigendoran1229 viewsBuilt by A. & J.Inglis at Pointhouse, Glasgow in 1946, the 693-ton Waverley entered service in 1947 and is the world's last sea-going paddler. She replaced the previous Waverley, built in 1899 and sunk at Dunkirk in 1940, andcruised to all parts of the Clyde Estuary until withdrawn after the 1973 season by Caledonian-MacBrayne. Next year she was sold to the Paddle Steamer Preservation Society and re-entered service in 1975 with support from local authorities. She is pictured at Craigendoran pier in 1972.Mar 05, 2009

View from pier 19012759 viewsThis view from the pierhead looking up Colquhoun Street was taken in 1901, but it is not known why a large crowd had gathered and what they were looking at. The shops are Robert Brown's wines and spirits and Lachlan McLachlan's very popular bakery. In 1929 the building which housed the two shops was demolished to allow the National Bank of Scotland to be built, and Lachlan McLachlan moved his business to Garelochhead where he worked until his death in 1951. East Clyde Street1166 viewsThis 51 x 74 cms watercolour of East Clyde Street by John Carlaw (1850-1934) was used on the cover of the Helensburgh Heritage Trust book '200 Years of Helensburgh', published to mark the burgh's bicentenary. The artist, a friend of the late Victorian painters of the 'Glasgow School', lived at Seacliffe, 112 East Clyde Street, some 200 yards from where this was painted.Mar 05, 2009
