Hermitage-House-croquet1.jpg
Croquet for all610 viewsDuring World War One from 1914-18 the Helensburgh Town Council-owned Hermitage House in Hermitage Park became a military hospital with a capacity for 58 patients who were sent from Stobhall Hospital in Glasgow. The wounded men in their blue uniforms were a familiar sight in the town, being wheeled around the park by their nurses. A number of local ladies and girls helped out in the hospital and the local Red Cross detachment also assisted the trained nurses. This photo by Helensburgh lamplighter Edward Graham, supplied by his great great grandson Ian MacQuire, shows patients playing croquet.
Ferry_House.jpg
Ferry House594 viewsChildren play on the shore at Ferry House, Rosneath, formerly Ferry Inn. The Edwin Lutyens-designed building was commissioned by Queen Victoria's daughter Princess Louise, the Dowager Duchess of Argyll, in the 1890s and rebuilt from an old pub, and for a time it was a home for injured soldiers. Bob Hope stayed there while entertaining troops at the nearby World War Two naval base. It fell into disuse, but was rebuilt again in the late 1950s by boatbuilder Peter Boyle. Image circa 1904.
Painting-by-Eleanor-Allen-Moore.jpg
A Bridge in Soochow548 viewsThis painting is by 'Glasgow Girl' Eleanor Allen Robertson, nee Moore, mother of Helensburgh artist and art historian Ailsa Tanner, nee Robertson. The painting was done when Dr Cecil Robertson accepted a post in public health with the Shanghai Municipal Council, and his wife and daughter went with him. Image kindly supplied by the owner of the painting, art collector Jim Smith from Blantyre.
Coulport_church3.jpg
Kilcreggan Church487 viewsThis small corrugated iron church at Kilcreggan was opened for public worship on May 30 1869, and later became a garage. It stood at the junction of the old Fort Road and the main road called the Ferry Brae, with the Ferry Cottage shown on the left part way up the hill. It was Free Church of Scotland and had no organ to sing to. Instead the Precentor struck a tuning fork to give the congregration the right key to start the hymn singing. Before the Reformation another church existed almost on the same site.

Granary-bus-crash-w.jpg
Granary bus crash75 viewsA Garelochhead Coach Services bus crashed into the Granary Restaurant on West Clyde Street after careering down Sinclair Street when the brakes failed. The driver of a Saturday bus from Luss elected to hit the building rather than land on the shore, and was widely praised for his skill in avoiding pedestrians. No-one was seriously injured.
