He left teaching to concentrate full time on his interest of painting Clyde shipping, including steamers and clippers, as well as the series of six famous 'Doon the Water' stops of Helensburgh Pier, Dunoon Pier, Gourock Pier, Greenock Pier, Rothesay Pier and Wemyss Bay. His paintings give an authentic feel of shipping on the Clyde in times past, and examples of his work are highly sought after.

To Pastures New384 viewsThis is considered to be one of the finest works of Sir James Guthrie (1859-1930), who lived much of his life at Rhu and Helensburgh and was the leader of the now famous Glasgow Boys. Painted in the summer of 1883 in Crowland, a small and picturesque village in Lincolnshire, it was completed in Helensburgh over the winter.

He is pictured on board the Sandown class minehunter HMS Bangor, with Commodore Chris Hockley behind him, and he enjoyed a guided tour and lunch with the ship's company. Prince William is currently a serving Second Lieutenant in the Household Cavalry, also known as the Blues and Royals.
